English Language Learners (ELL) Program

The English Language Learners (ELL) Program is an instructional program for students who are speakers of another language.  Participation in the program is determined by the ELL staff, based on the student's English language proficiency.  The goal of the program is to develop English communication and cognitive-academic language skills so that the students can achieve success and assimilate into the school community.

El programa de ELL (Inglés como segundo idioma) es un programa de instrucción para estudiantes que hablan otro idioma.  Los maestros determinan si un estudiante califica para estar en el programa.  El objetivo del programa es el desarrollo de la comunicación y las destrezas académicas y cognoscitivas de lenguaje para que los estudiantes puedan lograr éxito e integración a la comunidad escolar.

A partipacao no programa e determinada pelo pessoal do ELL que e baseado no conhecimento e desenvoltura da lingua inglesa do aluno. A meta do programa e desenvolver a comunicacao e abilidade dos alunos com a  lingua inglesa de modo que eles possam alcancar exito dentro da comunidade escolar.

**Full year placement based on language proficiency assessment and teacher recommendation.

It is recommended that all English Language learners take at least 2 years of mainstream English courses. This means that juniors and seniors who are enrolled in either ELL Advanced or ELL Transitional are eligible to enroll with teacher recommendation in either English 3 or English 4 concurrently depending on the grade of the student.

  Introduces and reinforces basic language skills in the four language domains (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) that students need to become more proficient and academically successful. Students work on reading skills such as decoding, phonemic awareness, comprehension, and fluency. This course is designed for students who may need more explicit and direct English instruction than traditional beginner ELL students.
expand 9013  ELL Level 1  2  Y    In accordance with Federal requirements; to exit direct ELL instruction, students must achieve a passing grade on the Wida ACCESS test for ELLs. Students who pass their English Language Proficiency Exam will be monitored for a period of two years to ensure academic success.
  ELL Level 1 introduces the non-native English learner to the English language through the receptive skills of listening and reading, and the productive skills of speaking and writing. The course is divided into two strands Strand A and Strand B. Strand A’s primary focus is on reading and writing, while Strand B’s primary focus is grammar, the four language domains are introduced, scaffolded, reinforced, and developed in each strand. In January of the ELL Level 1 course, all students will take the Wida ACCESS for ELLs Language Proficiency Test, whose results along with student performance throughout the year, will determine level placement for the following academic year.

Students who pass their English Language Proficiency Exam will be monitored for a period of two years to ensure academic success.
  ELL Level 2 builds on the skills learned in Level 1, although newcomers may be placed into ELL Level 2 if their performance on the Wida ACCESS Placement Test determines it. ELL Level 2 is a grammar-based course that contextualizes learned grammar through a variety of reading and writing units specifically designed to help students use, apply and analyze the English language. Students develop the basic grammar, vocabulary, and language skills needed to continue learning the English language. In January of the ELL Level 2 course, all students will take the Wida ACCESS for ELLs Language Proficiency Test, whose results along with student performance throughout the year, will determine level placement for the following academic year.

  ELL Level 3 builds on the skills learned in Level 2, although newcomers may be placed into ELL Level 3 if their performance on the Wida ACCESS Placement Test determines it. ELL Level 3 is a grammar-based course that develops students’ academic language of reading and writing through grammar instruction and its application to reading and writing. In Semester 1, students examine increasingly complex sentence and paragraph level sequencing structures. By semester 2, students use these structures to start the essay writing process. In January of the ELL Level 3 course, all students will take the Wida ACCESS for ELLs Language Proficiency Test, whose results along with student performance throughout the year, will determine level placement for the following academic year.

  Introduces and reinforces content knowledge and vocabulary for English language learners. Students will build background knowledge and instruction in the areas of Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, U.S History, and Geography as well as instruction in the use of general learning strategies. Broadens on the content of ELL Intermediate. This course provides students who have taken ELL Intermediate more time to prepare for ELL Advanced. Students will continue to develop the skills they need to be successful in the mainstream classroom.

  Engages the English language learner further through a wide range of academic language and thematic units focusing on social studies, science and math themes as well as authentic literature. Students expand knowledge of the English language and equip themselves with the necessary tools to succeed in the mainstream classroom by developing higher level reading and writing skills.

Students who pass their English Language Proficiency Exam will be monitored for a period of two years to ensure academic success.
  ELL Level 4 builds on the skills learned in Level 3, although newcomers may be placed into ELL Level 4 if their performance on the Wida ACCESS Placement Test determines it. ELL Level 4 is a pivotal course in the teaching of the prefect tenses and past participles to students. Through this course, students will develop their knowledge, understanding, and application of the perfect tenses and their role in enhancing the understanding of chronology in English. Likewise, students start to analyze both literary and informational texts, and develop knowledge of the different styles of essay writing required of a high school student. In January of the ELL Level 4 course, all students will take the Wida ACCESS for ELLs Language Proficiency Test, whose results along with student performance throughout the year, will determine level placement for the following academic year.

Students who pass their English Language Proficiency Exam will be monitored for a period of two years to ensure academic success.
  ELL Level 5 builds upon the knowledge acquired in ELL Level 4. ELL Level 5 is a grammar-based course in which students learn more challenging grammatical and academic language structures, and focus on error correction in the four language domains. Students develop their essay writing skills by focusing on paragraph and essay level structures, and study different types of essay writing from narrative, to persuasive, to writing a research project. Likewise, students study different reading genres and produce written responses to literature, examining literary techniques and informational text amongst others. In January of the ELL Level 5 course, all students will take the Wida ACCESS for ELLs Language Proficiency Test, whose results along with student performance throughout the year, will determine level placement for the following academic year.

  ELL Level 6 builds upon and reinforces the knowledge gained in ELL Level 4 and Level 5. It is a grammar-based course, whose primary role is to teach and reinforce correct use of complex grammatical structures. Students will study a selection of novels from contemporary literature, American literature, British literature, and poetry, and will know, use, and analyze the use of literary devices to respond to literary and informational texts. In writing, students will use the writing process to produce detailed multiple-paragraph essays that use compound complex sentences to add detail, and enhance meaning for the reader. In January of the ELL Level 6 course, all students will take the Wida ACCESS for ELLs Language Proficiency Test, whose results along with student performance throughout the year, will determine level placement for the following academic year.
