LYNDON B. JOHNSON

After Kennedy was shot, LBJ was sworn in as President. He signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, presented by Kennedy. His main focus was "the war on poverty." LBJ signed the Economic Opportunity Act to fight the war on poverty. In 1964 the election was Johnson/Humphrey v. Goldwater/Miller. Johnson/Humphrey won.

It is interesting that Barry Goldwater's bumper stickers were AuH2O.  That the average person knew what it meant was indicative of the effect of science education.

Dominican Issue - a revolution in the Dominican Republic began in 1965. Johnson ordered 400 marines into Santa Domingo. 22,000 American troops land, 10,000 waited in vessels to come ashore stayed until elections in 1966.

Johnson is primarily remembered for Vietnam. Primarily because of this he declined to run for reelection in 1968.

On June 6, 1968, RFK is assassinated in Los Angeles by Sirhan Sirhan while running for president. The election becomes Nixon/Agnew v. Humphrey/Muskie. The Union Leader nicknames Muskie, "Moscow" Muskie because of a recent visit to the US.S.R. which virtually ended the campaign.
