NIXON
You may remember that the race in 1968 was Nixon/Agnew v. Humphrey/Muskie. Nixon won the election. The major issues were Vietnam and Muskie's trip to Moscow.
The Vietnam protests had continued to escalate, including Kent State where National Guardsman opened fire upon demonstrators.

OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) is a group of oil producers. Because of the price structure, they decided to stop shipping as much oil to drive prices up causing an energy crisis in this country.
Two amendments were added to the Constitution: The 25th Amendment determining Presidential Disability and Succession to the presidency. The 26th Amendment lowered the voting age to 18.
In 1972, Nixon/Agnew ran for reelection against McGovern/Wallace.

During the election, people working for Nixon were concerned about his being reelected. A group called CREEP (Committee for the Re-election of the President) organized a burglary of the Democratic Headquarters in the Watergate building. When it was discovered, the White House dismissed the allegations. There were accusations of wire tappings and tapes which Nixon did not deliver to investigators. Later, there was an admission that Nixon hampered the investigation. On November 7, 1973, sentences in the Watergate break-in were given. Agnew resigned on October 10, 1973 because of tax evasion while governor of Maryland. Gerald Ford was named as Vice President. Nixon resigned on August 8, 1974, before the House of Representatives impeached Nixon on the grounds of obstruction of justice, abuse of power, willful disobedience of subpoenas issued by the House of Representatives. Nixon denied being guilty of anything. On October 21, 1974, Nelson Rockefeller is sworn in as Vice President. On September 8, 1974, Ford grated Nixon a full pardon. This pardon ended his hopes for further elections.
