Battle of Manila Bay

On May 1^st 1898, the first major battle of the Spanish-American War took place in Manila Bay.   The Americans began the attack at 5:40 a.m., and the Spanish had surrendered by 12:40p.m..  The Americans suffered only one casualty, which was from a heart attack.  This battle destroyed practically the entire Spanish fleet in about 6 hours.

Capture of Guam

On June 20^th Captain Henry Glass of the USS Charleston was on his way to the battle of Manila when he opened sealed orders to capture Guam. So he sailed over to Guam and fired off about a dozen shots. There was no return fire. Soon after, a ship flying the Spanish flag sailed to the Charleston. A man boarded the ship and asked to borrow some powder in order to return the salute. Glass informed him that war had been declared and that they better surrender. The man was released and sent back with a message to surrender the island. The Spanish later complied.  The only cannons the Americans found were 300 years old and had been deemed unsafe even for ceremonial purposes.
