  About PTO

Did you know that as a parent with a child who attends Sunset Heights Elementary you are automatically a member of our PTO? There are no membership fees or dues, and the door is wide open to have new faces join us each year to assist in supporting our school.

Meetings are held monthly and cover school/business-related items and status is reported on various activities. Occasionally speakers of interest are scheduled to present to the PTO.

PTO holds an annual fundraiser in September selling gift items from catalogs sent home with each child. We then hold other fundraisers, as needed, to support the operating budget required.

PTO-sponsored activities include family nights such as roller skating night, game night and a pizza supper in March. There are literally hundreds of ways the PTO contributes to our school. The following list names just a few:

  • Sponsor school activities, i.e. cross-country running team, ski club, staffing the library during book fairs, and much, much more
  • Volunteer in classrooms, office or the library as teacher's aides
  • A few years ago, PTO raised thousands of dollars and built the beautiful playground that is now behind the school. We maintain the playground during bi-annual fix-up days.
  • Contribute financially to everything from teachers' wish lists to student field trips
  • Photocopy teachers' papers, help out with field days, and bake for school events
  • Hold a talent show
  • Publish a newsletter
  • Publish a yearbook that includes every grade with a special focus on the 5th grade class
  • Sponsor programs to enrich the teacher's curriculum for all grades
As you can see, the opportunities to get involved range from something you can do at home or volunteering your time at school. Any skill you can offer is valuable to the Sunset Heights community. We need your time, energy and ideas to guarantee continued success at our school.

On behalf of the board we invite you to join us and get involved.  Our first meeting of the 2008-2009 school year will be on September 16, 2008 @ 6:45 - 9 PM in the library.  This format of this first meeting will be very informal and more of a getting to know new comers and providing a description of the services we provide to our school.  We look forward to seeing you!

Sincerely, Shelley Fay and Judie Fisher
Sunset Heights' 2008/2009 PTO Co-Presidents

Sunset Heights PTO Program and Committee Descriptions

The following provides a general description of the various committees and programs that the PTO sponsors. Please contact us if you are interested in volunteering for something below:

Fundraising Committee Chaired by Cathy Perault - The largest fundraiser is held in the fall. Selects the fundraising company, the products to be sold, and reports additional fundraising ideas to the entire PTO Board.

Parent Volunteer Committee Chaired by Heather Klein - who seeks to provide needed volunteers from among the PTO membership to assist the school in a variety of activities on an as-needed basis. Some examples of tasks include photocopying, baking, covering books for the library, book fairs, helping with health screenings, and many more.

  • Earth Day
  • Field Day
  • Fund walk
  • Teacher Appreciation Week
  • Staff Luncheon
  • Game Night
  • Pizza Supper Night
  • Ski Program
  • Talent Show
  • Sunset Spirit Wear

 Volunteers

One of Sunset Heights' greatest assets is it's Volunteer Program and the great group of volunteers that participate in it.

Volunteers at our school assist with many important functions/programs. We have parents who:

  • bake
  • serve on the Parent/Teacher Organization
  • chaperone school functions
  • help in the library or the classrooms
  • create the yearbook
  • work in the office
  • assist the school nurse
  • serve as coach/mentor in extra curricular activites

This only names a few of the contributions made to our school through the Volunteer Program.

There are many opportunities to plug into! Please let us know via email if you are interested in becoming a Sunset Heights Parent Volunteer.
