Grade 3

Miss Ota, Mrs. Norway, Mrs. Collins and Mrs. Fisher
In third grade…
- We begin using letter grades on the report card for work habits, behavior, math and language arts
- We take four field trips each year.
- Formal instruction in cursive writing begins!
The third grade reader makes the transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn”. Fluency and comprehension strategies are focused upon in reading instruction.
The third grade Everyday Math curriculum requires Fact Automaticity, with the belief that unless you have "fact power" you won't be able to focus on higher level creative thinking. The third grade students should master their addition, subtraction and multiplication facts by the end of the school year.
We write on a daily basis incorporating skills from the Scott Foresman program and the 6 + 1 traits. Students will have the opportunity to write for a variety of purposes, such as a descriptive paragraph, a personal narrative, a comparison/contrast paragraph, a How-To Report, and a persuasive letter.
Our science units are earth, and weather, simple machines, light and sound, and plants and animals.
The third grade social studies covers communities and map, continents and oceans, native americans and animal habitats around the world.
